Following research appointments in the (then) Plant Breeding Institute in Cambridge UK, where work started on the first molecular markers for wheat, Peter returned to apply his skills in the Australian plant breeding field, at the University of Sydney. He is Professor of Molecular Plant Breeding and Director of the University of Sydney Plant Breeding Institute, Cobbitty, and is also the Genomics and Proteomics Program Manager for Value Added Wheat CRC Ltd. His work in wheat genetics is in two main areas: the identification and use of molecular markers in wheat breeding, and the identification of useful genetic variation in wheat. The molecular marker work is largely on identification of microsatellite markers linked to quality and disease resistances. His work to identify sources of variation has been concentrated on starch properties. Peter has published over 50 journal papers, and more than 40 full conference papers.
